† Return to God with all your heart in this holy season of penitence and renewal †
Worship in Lent and Holy Week 2020
Ash Wednesday (February 26): spoken liturgy at 12 Noon; Soup at 5:30 PM followed by a Spanish service at 6:00 PM; sung liturgy at 7:30 PM. Each service will include Holy Communion and imposition of ashes.
Sundays in Lent (March 1 – 29): Holy Communion worship services at 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM (Spanish) reflect the quieter, more solemn season, while still celebrating Christ’s presence among us. Each week we see echoes of our own baptismal renewal as Jesus contends with forces of sin, evil, and death in his journey to the cross and resurrection.
Palm/Passion Sunday (April 5) at 9:45 AM, together with St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, we bless palms at Meridian Hill Park, then process back to Augustana for doughnuts and coffee. At 10:30 AM we bless more palms, form a joyful procession into the sanctuary, and then, marking the sharp turn towards the cross, journey with Jesus through his solemn passion and death. The service includes a dramatic reading of the passion narrative.
The Triduum (Three Days) – the heart of the Christian story, of our faith, of our life, meant to flow as one worship service in three parts:
Maundy Thursday (April 9): worship at 5:30 (Spanish), and 7:30 PM, with individual anointing for forgiveness, footwashing, and remembrance of the Last Supper. The heart of the Maundy Thursday liturgy is Jesus’ commandment to love one another. At the end of the 7:30 PM service, the altar is stripped as we prepare for the solemnity of Good Friday.
Good Friday (April 10): worship at Noon, 5:30 (Spanish), and 7:30 PM. You are invited to pause in adoration of the Cross – Christ’s self-sacrificial gift that enables us to live.
The Easter Vigil (April 11): 5:30 PM (Spanish) and 8:00 PM (English) – the most beautiful service of the Church Year, the culmination of our three day journey with Jesus. Join us for this service as the light of Christ returns to the sanctuary, we hear the stories of our ancestors in the faith, affirm our baptism into Christ through which we are transformed with new life, and celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter, at last declaring: Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
The Resurrection of Our Lord (Easter Sunday, April 12): festival worship at 10:30 AM with glorious special music as we celebrate the Resurrection in the grandest services of the year. Join us as we give thanks for the new life we have in Christ’s rising. Alleluia!
